Meet the North Region Team

The North Region is made up of four Counties - namely, Northumberland, Durham, Cleveland and Cumbria. Regional Development Officer Wendy Suddes, is responsible for this Region. Wendy is responsible for the Yorkshire Region too and is the only member of Society staff based in the North and Yorkshire area.

The North Region Committee of the British Horse Society is made up of a number of existing County Officers plus several individuals who voluntarily contribute to the work of the Society at Regional level.

The following pages, will attempt to provide an introduction to your Regional Representatives, who all commit an enormous amount of time and energy, promoting the British Horse Society and its activities, in your area.

Regional Chair

Our Current Regional Chair is Mrs Muriel Allan BHSI. Muriel has been a member of the society for longer than she cares to remember - and combines running a busy training and livery yard with her role as a British Horse Society Chief Examiner.

Muriel is married to John (who is also a most valuable supporter of our work in the Region), and has two grown up children and three step-children.

Muriel was born in Aberdeen (still got the accent) and had her first pony at twelve years of age. Originally an English teacher and then followed a lifelong love of horses

Loves: Theatre, Reading (anything and everything), Tonkinese cats!!
Dislikes: Can't think of anything!

Regional Treasurer

Charles Stirling is a Chartered Accountant, practicing in Newcastle and has lived near Corbridge for over 30 years. Charles has a lifelong passion for horses having learned to ride as a child, on the beach on the Isle of Wight. Charles went onto to serve in the 16th/5th Queens Royal Lancers and is very proud of the fact that many former members of this regiment were founder members of the British Horse Society.

Charles has been a marvellous Treasurer for the North Region for many years (he keeps trying to retire but we will not let him)! Indeed, Charles has made a name for himself by consistently winning the prize for the most prompt return of accounts at each year end – we are eternally grateful for this, as the cash bonus is a hugely important and welcome addition to Regional funds.

Charles and his family share a passion for Point-to Point and they are currently enjoying a successful season.

Charles likes: the friendship that exists amongst people with horses
and dislikes: the unworkable Hunting Act

Regional Road Safety Officer

Mr David Kerry. In addition to his BHS roles, David is the Senior Road Safety Officer working for Capita Symonds on behalf of Cumbria County Council. He deals with all types of road safety for both children and adults. He is Chairman of the Penrith Group of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Past jobs have included bank clerk; motorcycle instructor; District Road Safety Officer in Woking, Surrey; barman; and riding instructor at an RDA centre.

Likes: endurance swimming, cycling, photography, sunny days and calling dressage tests.
Dislikes: putting the clock back in October, windy weather, difficult people and politics.
Mr David Kerry

Fundraising Officer

Miss Jane White is originally from Shropshire and following a BSc and MSc worked for a publishing company before moving to the North East with her partner Lee taking up the role of Fund-raising Officer for the Northumbria Wildlife Trust and the RNLI. A complete career change however, now means that Jane qualified as a nurse in September 2004!

A lifelong horse enthusiast, Jane owns Prince, (a sprightly 26 year-old horse, whom she has owned for 19 years!) the attention he deserves. Jane describes herself as "firmly in the Happy Hacker category", but has recently embarked upon a path of self-improvement and survived her first dressage competition.

Jane is pictured here with friends' horse Rory, proudly wearing a prized rosette for jumping.

Likes: Chocolate, Full-bodied reds, Summer evenings and Armonside
Dislikes: Bills, windy weather, and the size of my posterior in breeches!!

Miss Jane White

The Chairman for each of the four Counties automatically sits on the Regional Committee.

Profiles for each of the County Chairs can be found on the County pages of this site along with the respective County Officers.

Each of the activities in which the Society is involved is represented on the Regional Committee.

At present the following people are North Region Officers - most of them somehow find time for a County role too!

Access and Rights of Way: Mrs Sue Rogers (County Officer for Northumberland)

Assistant: Mrs Kathy Atkinson (County Officer for North Tyneside)

Assistant: Miss Margaret Hedley (County Officer for Durham)

Welfare: Mr Peter Dean (Cumbria)
